- Description: Amazon has blocked Meta's Muse AI agent from buying on its site, while Shopify has plugged it straight into checkout. The fight over who lets AI shoppers in is coming, and UK rules are already waiting.

On Sunday night, Amazon started blocking Muse, Meta's new AI agent, from shopping on Amazon.com. People who asked Muse to buy something there were greeted with a pop-up saying that "continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates Amazon's Conditions of Use." The next day Shopify did the opposite, announcing it was "partnering deeply with Muse to enable agentic checkout with Shop Pay on all Shopify stores."

So in the space of 24 hours, the online shopping world split in two over a simple question: when a robot turns up to buy something on your behalf, do you let it in?

## Amazon's case against Muse

According to GeekWire, Amazon says Meta didn't ask permission before pointing Muse at its site, that the agent doesn't identify itself when browsing, and that it "captures and stores customer credentials". Amazon's line is that agents buying for customers should "operate openly and respect service provider decisions about whether or not to participate."

Meta has said Muse "has no visibility into people's passwords or payment methods", and that credentials are stored securely. The two companies are hardly enemies, either. GeekWire notes Meta has a multibillion-dollar deal to use Amazon's Graviton chips.

This isn't Amazon's first stand-off. It sued Perplexity over its Comet shopping browser and has blocked agents from Google and OpenAI. But TechTimes points out that in August the US Ninth Circuit court overturned Amazon's injunction against Perplexity, finding Amazon "unlikely to succeed" on its US anti-hacking claims. The court treated the user, not the AI, as the one accessing Amazon. Amazon can still argue its terms of use were broken, which is exactly what the pop-up does.

## Shopify smells a checkout fee

Shopify's enthusiasm isn't pure open-mindedness. As The Motley Fool explains, orders placed through Muse go through Shop Pay and Shopify Payments, so Shopify earns processing fees on them just as it would on a normal sale. President Harley Finkelstein said "agentic transactions carry the exact economics as an online store transaction." Investors liked that: Shopify's shares rose around 7% on Monday and again on Tuesday.

Meta's chief AI officer Alexandr Wang was blunter about the goal: "We want to give our Musers access to a wide range of stores to find the absolute perfect products." Yes, Musers.

## The awkward bit for Amazon

TechTimes highlights an inconvenient detail. Amazon has its own agent, Buy for Me, which visits other retailers' websites and completes purchases for Amazon customers. Retailers that don't want it have to opt out by email. That's the reverse of the ask-first standard Amazon now wants from Meta.

Amazon would say its own store is its own business, and it has a point. But "our agents can shop anywhere, yours can't shop here" is a position that tends to attract competition regulators.

## What it means in Britain

First, the practical bit: Muse's shopping features aren't available here yet. Meta's own announcement said "Muse is rolling out in the US on iOS, Android and muse.ai", with no UK date.

When agents do arrive, UK rules already have something to say. The Competition and Markets Authority published guidance in March on businesses using AI agents, and its message was simple: "Consumer law requires businesses to treat customers fairly, and it does not matter whether customers interact with a person or an AI agent." Under the new digital markets regime, the CMA can fine firms up to 10% of global turnover.

That regime also lets the CMA give big platforms "strategic market status" and set rules for how they behave. So far it has designated Google's search and Apple's and Google's mobile platforms, and opened an investigation into Microsoft's business software. Amazon's shop isn't on the list. If gatekeeping AI shoppers becomes common, that could change.

For shoppers, the basics should still hold. A purchase an agent makes on your behalf is still a purchase by you, from a trader, so normal online shopping rights should apply. The harder question, who is at fault when your agent buys the wrong thing, hasn't been tested yet.

## To be fair to Amazon

An unidentified bot logging in with customers' passwords is a real security worry, and Amazon has every reason to be cautious after [this week's stories about AI agents wandering into systems they shouldn't](https://mindthehype.co.uk/gemini-openai-ai-agents-hacking-real-systems/). Wanting agents to announce themselves is reasonable. It would just sound more convincing if Buy for Me played by the same rules.

📊

**The verdict. Hype: 4/5 · Substance: 3/5 · Spin: Medium.** Amazon's block and Shopify's embrace are both real, but each is also a sales pitch: Amazon for its own shopping agents, Shopify for its payments business, and the market duly rewarded Shopify's shares. The substance for UK readers is future-tense, because Muse's shopping features are US-only for now. Watch whether Meta brings Muse to Britain, and whether the CMA treats "who is allowed to shop here" as a competition question.

*Mind the hype. The robots want to go shopping. The shops are still deciding who gets a trolley.*
