- Description: AMD is now worth $1 trillion, but bond buyers are charging AI giants more to borrow and a central banker has said the B-word. Here's why it matters for UK pensions and ISAs.

On Monday 21 September, AMD's shares jumped by close to 10% and the American chipmaker was worth more than $1 trillion for the first time. The same week, bond investors started charging AI-heavy tech giants noticeably more to borrow, and Australia's top central banker said, out loud, that AI might be a bubble.

Together they describe a market that is still buying, but has started reading the small print.

> Some people think it's a bubble, some people don't. I don't have a particular view one way or the other, but it's a risk that I think we're watching.
> — Michele Bullock, governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia

## A trillion dollars, powered by an app

Fast Company reports that AMD's shares closed at $615.52, up nearly 10% on the day and around 190% since early January. AMD joins Nvidia, Broadcom and Micron as a US chipmaker in the trillion-dollar club.

The trigger, according to Bloomberg via Yahoo Finance, was partly [Meta's Muse AI agent](https://mindthehype.co.uk/amazon-blocks-meta-muse-ai-shopping-agent/) reaching the top of Apple's App Store. The theory goes that more people using AI agents means more demand for server processors. Jefferies analyst Jacky He put it this way: "As AI agents gain broader consumer adoption, demand for server CPUs should benefit from higher inference, orchestration, and infrastructure workloads." Maybe. It's still a lot of value to hang on one app's chart position.

## The bond market is less starry-eyed

Lenders are getting fussier. Reuters reports that Goldman Sachs expects hyperscalers, the giant cloud firms such as Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet and Meta, to issue $420 billion of debt next year, up 60% on 2026\. According to ICE BofA data cited by Reuters, AI-related borrowers now pay a spread of around 115 basis points, against 78 for the investment-grade market as a whole. In plain English, AI debt is getting pricier. These are US-market figures.

"We're being very selective in terms of how we invest within hyperscaler debt," said Colby Stilson of Brown Advisory. Lon Erickson of Thornburg was blunter: "Investors are only able to digest so much, so fast."

Then there's Bullock. Speaking at a CEDA event in Sydney on Tuesday, the RBA governor said central banks saw AI as "the great white hope" for productivity, but had seen little sign of it yet. Early on, she said, while "people fiddle around and try and figure out what to do with this new technology, productivity actually can decline".

## Where this lands in a British pension

You may not own a single AMD share, but if you have a workplace pension or a stocks and shares ISA in a global tracker fund, you probably own a slice. Saga pointed out last December that US shares made up 74% of global equity markets, so a "global" fund is heavily American, and heavily tech.

The Bank of England has noticed. Its Financial Policy Committee said in its July record that "rising equity prices have been driven, in part, by a narrow set of AI-related companies, increasing market concentration in some global indices". It also warned that AI firms' borrowing "has accelerated rapidly", and that a rethink of AI's prospects "could trigger a fall in equity prices" made worse by concentration, momentum trading and leverage.

And the productivity boom that is supposed to justify all this? The ONS says UK output per hour was just 0.7% higher in the year to April to June 2026 on its preferred measure. On the older survey-based measure it actually fell by 0.2%. Whatever AI is doing to British workplaces, it hasn't shown up in the national figures yet.

## To be fair to the bulls

A bubble needs more than big numbers. AMD sells real chips to real customers, and J.P. Morgan notes that Alphabet, Amazon and Microsoft reported a combined 48% rise in cloud revenue in the second quarter. The Bank of England itself says AI "had the potential to raise productivity across a range of sectors". Bullock, too, expects gains once firms "reimagine our business processes". The question isn't whether AI is useful. It's whether today's prices already assume it has worked.

📊

**The verdict. Hype: 5/5 · Substance: 3/5 · Spin: Medium.** The trillion-dollar headline is market data, but the rally behind it was fed by excitement over a single chatbot app, and much of the commentary comes from analysts and fund managers with positions to talk up. The warnings, from bond investors, the RBA and the Bank of England, are on the record and independently reported. Watch the price hyperscalers pay to borrow over the coming months: if investors keep demanding more, that tells you more than any share price.

*Mind the hype. When the lenders start asking questions, it's worth checking what your pension is holding.*
