Google is pulling Gemini in two directions at once. On 30 September it announced Gemini 4 Argon, a new top-end model aimed first at its most expensive subscribers and paying developers. And from 9 October, people using the Gemini app without paying lose access to Google's Flash and Pro models and are left with Flash-Lite, the smallest of the three.

The best Gemini is getting better. The free Gemini is getting smaller.

> Users who do not pay for Gemini will no longer be able to access (3.6) Flash or (3.1) Pro.

## What changes on 9 October

Google's help page sets out the new line-up by plan:

- **No plan (free):** Flash-Lite only.
- **Google AI Plus (£4.49 a month in the UK):** Flash-Lite and Flash, but no Pro.
- **Google AI Pro (£18.99) and AI Ultra (from £79.99):** all three models. AI Pro also gains Deep Think, Google's slow, "maximum parallel reasoning" mode, which was previously limited to Ultra.

Limits are changing too. Rather than counting prompts, Google now uses a compute-based allowance that "will refresh every 5 hours until you reach your weekly limit". Complex prompts, long chats, image and video generation, Deep Research and Pro all use it up faster. Google is also adding low, medium and high effort settings. Higher effort gives more thorough answers but, in Google's words, "will also use more of your limit".

Notebookcheck reports that AI Plus subscribers "should receive an email that explains when these changes will take effect for you", so the exact date may vary by account. The support page doesn't mention any UK-specific exceptions.

## Argon: Google's new top model

Gemini 4 Argon is Google's new frontier model, pitched at long, complicated jobs such as coding, finance work and cyber defence. 9to5Google reports it can produce up to a million tokens of output in one go, up from 64,000\. For now it's limited to trusted testers and partners in Google's Fairwind programme, with AI Ultra subscribers and paying API customers next in line. Google hasn't given a date for anyone else.

Google's benchmark claims are strong. It reports 77.9% on the DeepSWE coding test, ahead of the figures it quotes for Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Astra. Engadget cites independent testers Artificial Analysis as saying Argon matches GPT-6 Astra on their Intelligence Index "at 60 percent of the cost per task at current discounted prices". On 5 October, Argon was also top of Arena's crowd-voted text leaderboard. For developers it costs $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens at an introductory rate, rising to $4 and $20 later.

## Ada's take: the free lunch is shrinking

For a long time, Gemini's free tier was the easiest recommendation in AI: a capable model for nothing, built into the phones many people already own. That's now less true. Flash-Lite is fine for quick questions and rewrites, but harder tasks such as long documents, tricky reasoning and serious research now sit behind a paywall.

It's the same direction the whole industry is heading. As Notebookcheck points out, Anthropic made a similar move in September by keeping Claude Opus 5.5 for paying customers. Running these models costs real money, and the companies are finally pricing that in. For UK users the cheapest route back to Flash is AI Plus at £4.49 a month, and to Pro it's AI Pro at £18.99, which also bundles 5TB of storage.

If you use Gemini's Pro model for free, finish anything important before 9 October and export what you need.

## To be fair to Google

Google is still giving something away, and it's adding Deep Think to the £18.99 plan rather than keeping it for the £79.99-plus tier. Effort settings and a clear five-hour allowance are arguably more honest than limits nobody can see. And Argon's numbers, while largely Google's own, are partly backed up by independent testers. The free tier is getting smaller, but the paid tiers are getting more for the money.

📊

**The verdict. Hype: 4/5 · Substance: 4/5 · Spin: Medium.** The plan changes come straight from Google's own help pages and are confirmed by several outlets. Argon's benchmarks are mostly Google's own claims, with some independent support. The bottom line: free Gemini users get less from 9 October, and Argon is mainly for top-tier and business customers for now. Watch when Argon reaches AI Pro, if it does, and whether rivals trim their free tiers too.

*Mind the hype. Google's smartest model is coming. Just not to the free tier.*
