- Description: iOS 27 brings a rebuilt Siri that UK iPhones can use and EU ones can't, but only via a waitlist, in English and on newer phones. And Apple may have another OS coming for the home.

Apple released iOS 27 on 14 September, alongside iPadOS 27, watchOS 27, tvOS 27, visionOS 27 and macOS 27, which it has named Golden Gate. The headline is a rebuilt Siri that Apple now calls Siri AI, with its own app and the ability to understand what's on your screen. And if Bloomberg's reporting is right, Apple has another operating system up its sleeve: one for a smart home screen that could appear as soon as October.

UK iPhone owners get a better deal than most of Europe this time. They just don't get it all at once.

## Siri, rebuilt, with a waiting list

Siri AI is Apple's attempt to catch up with ChatGPT and Gemini. According to Macworld, it handles natural conversation and follow-up questions, draws on personal context from Messages, Mail, Photos and Notes, understands what's on screen, and adds a camera mode for asking about what you're looking at. Conversations now live in a dedicated Siri app that syncs between devices.

The catch is that installing iOS 27 doesn't switch it on. As TechRadar found, you have to go to Settings, then Siri, and tap **Join waitlist**, then wait for a notification. TechRadar's UK-based reviewer was eligible to join. Apple's own UK page adds more small print: Siri AI is "available in English to start", and it's among the Apple Intelligence features "subject to daily usage limits". Macworld reports that French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish follow in October with iOS 27.1.

Hardware matters too. iOS 27 itself runs on every iPhone that ran iOS 26, from the iPhone 11 up, so nothing has been dropped. But Siri AI and the wider Apple Intelligence features need an iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max or any iPhone 16 or later, according to Apple's footnotes. MacRumors says the new, more expressive Siri voices go further still, needing an iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone Air or newer.

## Why the UK gets Siri and the EU doesn't

Here's the bit with a genuine UK angle. Apple has held Siri AI back from iPhones, iPads and Apple Watches across the European Union at launch, citing the EU's Digital Markets Act, according to Gagadget and TechRadar. Mac users in the EU can use it. There's no date for the rest.

The DMA doesn't apply in Britain after Brexit, so UK owners of supported iPhones can join the waitlist straight away. The UK does have its own rules, though. The Competition and Markets Authority designated Apple's mobile platform with "strategic market status" in October 2025, and GOV.UK records that Apple has since committed to let developers request interoperable access to features in its operating system. So far, that hasn't stopped a feature launching here. Whether that stays true as the CMA's work goes on is worth watching.

## The rest of the update, and what's missing

Beyond Siri, the changes are more incremental. Apple claims apps launch up to 30% faster, the photo library opens 70% faster and AirDrop is 80% faster, according to MacRumors. Those are Apple's figures, not independent tests. Photos gains AI tools called Extend and Reframe alongside an upgraded Clean Up, Safari can group tabs by topic and notify you when a web page changes, and there's a slider to tone down the Liquid Glass look Apple introduced in 2025.

Some features aren't for us. MacRumors reports that bill splitting with Apple Cash is US-only, and iPhone Handoff, which lets two iPhones share one number, needs your network's support; as we reported, [most UK networks aren't ready](https://mindthehype.co.uk/iphone-handoff-ee-uk-networks/). Others simply aren't finished. Apple's page marks several features as "coming in a future software update", and Macworld lists a redesigned Health app, automatic password changes and suggested replies in Messages among them. iOS 27.0.1 is also needed to fix the [iPhone 18 Pro Face ID bug](https://mindthehype.co.uk/iphone-18-pro-face-id-reboot-bug-uk/).

## Next up: homeOS, maybe

Then there's the operating system Apple hasn't announced. In his Power On newsletter on 20 September, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that Apple is preparing a new OS for its long-rumoured smart home hub, according to MacRumors. The device is described as a speaker with a square screen of around six to seven inches, built around Siri AI. Gurman reports that it will use facial recognition to recognise who's in front of it and show their own content, support several users, and blend elements of iOS, watchOS and tvOS, with app icons, widgets and customisable clock faces.

The name "homeOS" comes from trademark filings, not from Apple. Timing is loose too: The Apple Post, citing Gurman, gives a window from October 2026 to early 2027, and says delays have been partly tied to Apple's Siri work. There's no price, no UK date and no official word.

## To be fair to Apple

Rolling out a big AI assistant gradually, behind a waitlist and usage limits, is more responsible than switching it on for hundreds of millions of people overnight and hoping the servers cope. Keeping every iPhone back to the iPhone 11 on the new version is generous by industry standards. And on the EU, Apple is following rules it didn't write. The UK being on the right side of that line is a quirk of regulation, not a favour from Cupertino.

📊

**The verdict. Hype: 4/5 · Substance: 3/5 · Spin: Medium.** The iOS 27 facts come from Apple's own UK pages and footnotes, reported consistently by Macworld, MacRumors and TechRadar, but the headline performance figures are Apple's claims and haven't been independently tested. The homeOS story is pure Bloomberg reporting: plausible and well sourced, but Apple hasn't confirmed a thing. Watch for when the Siri waitlist actually clears for UK users, what arrives in iOS 27.1, and whether October brings a home hub or another delay.

*Mind the hype. The new Siri is here. You just have to queue for it.*
