New motorcycle sales in the UK are having their best run in years. Registrations rose 17% in August compared with a year earlier, and are up almost 16% for the year so far. Yet used-bike giant SuperBike Factory, which sold around 17,000 bikes a year at its peak, collapsed owing £27.8m, according to the administrators' report covered by Visordown this week.

Both things are true at once, and the gap between them says a lot about where the British bike market really is.

## How a £94m-a-year dealer ran out of road

SuperBike Factory sold used motorcycles through six showrooms, including a flagship in Macclesfield, and a large online operation. At its peak, Visordown reports, the group turned over around £94m a year and sold about 17,000 bikes. Car Dealer Magazine says it listed more than 1,850 used motorcycles online at the moment it went under.

The end came quickly. In mid-July its IT supplier cut access to critical systems over unpaid bills. Administrators from KR8 Advisory were appointed on 20 July, and around 273 staff were made redundant.

The administrators' report now fills in the numbers. According to Visordown, the business recorded a £19.1m pre-tax loss in 2024 and another £11.7m in unpublished 2025 accounts. The main creditors are:

- its private equity owner, Enact, owed £14.2m
- DF Capital Bank, which financed its stock, owed around £11.9m
- HMRC, owed £2.2m under a time-to-pay arrangement
- other unsecured creditors, "including suppliers, customers and employees", owed a further £5.3m

The administrators blamed "a prolonged slowdown in the used motorcycle market following the Covid-era boom". In July they described "a perfect storm of challenges", including tighter consumer finance, rising costs and uncertainty in motor finance.

## The new-bike boom that didn't save it

Meanwhile the new market is flying. British Dealer News, using industry data, reports 8,009 new motorcycles, scooters, mopeds and tricycles registered in August, up 17%, and 75,574 in the first eight months of the year, up 15.7%. Adventure bikes led the way, up more than 41% on last August.

Tony Campbell, chief executive of the Motorcycle Industry Association, said: "August marks another strong month for our sector, with market volumes continuing to recover compared to 2025."

That word "recover" is doing some honest work. Growth of 17% sounds dramatic, but Visordown notes that 2025 was a tough year, so it's growth from a low base. And a healthy new-bike market doesn't automatically help a used-bike specialist. Visordown's report lists falling motorcycle values, higher borrowing costs and slower stock turnover among the pressures. For a dealer holding hundreds of bikes on borrowed money, every month a bike sits unsold, and loses value, costs twice.

## What it means for UK riders

For customers, the collapse wasn't abstract. Visordown has reported cases of riders struggling to recover motorcycles, including bikes handed over to the company that were then advertised for sale before payment had been made. Customers are among the unsecured creditors, who rank behind secured lenders when the money is shared out.

The practical lesson for anyone selling or part-exchanging a bike is simple, if dull: don't hand over the bike or the V5C logbook until the money has actually cleared. However big and established the dealer looks.

## To be fair to SuperBike Factory

This was a business built for a different market. During the pandemic, demand for used bikes soared and a big, online-first dealer with lots of stock looked like the smart model. When prices fell and borrowing got more expensive, that same stock became a millstone. The administrators say several potential buyers showed interest before a sale fell through. Nothing in the administrators' account suggests anything other than a business caught out by a turning market, and hundreds of staff lost their jobs through no fault of their own.

📊

**The verdict. Hype: 2/5 · Substance: 3/5 · Spin: Low.** The figures come from the administrators' report to creditors and company accounts, as reported by Visordown and Car Dealer Magazine, and from industry registration data. There's no marketing gloss here, just numbers. Watch for what, if anything, unsecured creditors get back, and whether other used-bike specialists feel the same squeeze.

*Mind the hype. A rising market lifts all bikes, unless you bought them at last year's prices.*
